Episode Notes

Simon Vestner comes from a true elevator family. The family-owned company Vestner Aufzüge has been in business since the 1930s and has always maintained its place among the major manufacturers. Simon Vestner, however, has retired from the management of the parent company and is in the process of building something entirely of his own: IT solutions with which elevators can be serviced preventively and thus work more reliably. And it doesn't matter whether they come from his own company or not. But Vestner wants even more: he wants to make the elevator the backbone of the networked building. A project that is already underway: robotic mini-bars in hotels where robots independently bring drinks to the floors by elevator. A concept that could also be used in hospitals and other places. In order to develop all this, the junior is deliberately staying away from the parent company because: “new business models are difficult to implement under your own roof.“ Tobias Rappers, Managing Director of Maschinenraum and Capital editor Nils Kreimeier talk to Vestner.

Simon Vestner

Simon Vestner grew up with elevators. He is the grandson of Wilhelm Vestner, who founded the elevator manufacturer of the same name in 1930. For several years, Simon ran the successful family business together with his father. Then he decided to build something of his own and reinterpret the role of the elevator in the building. He founded VESTNER.DIGITAL - now Digital Spine - with the brand Aufzughelden in Berlin in 2015. The team consists of over 30 people: IoT and AI professionals, engineers and technicians, and building experts work daily to make elevators more digital.
