Episode Description
The year 2022 was an extreme year for the German economy: Russia's war caused trading partners to fall away, the energy crisis brought massive cost increases, and disrupted supply chains made production more difficult. How did family businesses cope - and, above all, what happens next? Prof. Dr. Nadine Kammerlander from WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management and Prof. Jörg Rocholl, PhD, President of the International School of Management ESMT, address this question in this episode of the podcast "Alles neu...? Aus dem Maschinenraum." The diagnosis is cautiously positive: "Family businesses are insanely resilient," says Kammerlander, a fact that played a decisive role in ensuring that the crisis year of 2022 went much better in many respects than originally feared. "Adaptability is one of the great strengths of our economic system," Rocholl says. "It has shown how strong the market economy is." However, problems are also emerging: The German economy is in danger of falling behind internationally because it is struggling with high energy prices and the transfer from basic research to companies is not working. At the same time, he said, the shortage of skilled workers is hampering small and medium-sized businesses in particular. "We now have to consider how to shape the location so that companies can flourish here," Rocholl says. According to Kammerlander, it's also about taking a positive look at the role of the entrepreneur, which has been lost in recent decades. A look back at an extraordinary year and an outlook on the new one - in the podcast - with Tobias Rappers, Managing Director of Maschinenraum, and Capital editor Nils Kreimeier.
