The Underberg Group has been selling its eponymous herbal schnapps for 178 years, and always under the motto "Semper idem" - always the same. However, not everything has remained the same since the beginning. "I always have to look at how I can keep the company healthy," says Christiane Underberg, entrepreneur and current Deputy Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of Semper Idem Underberg AG, in the podcast "Alles Neu…? Aus dem Maschinenraum". "You have to throw sandbags overboard from time to time - so that you have buoyancy again." What she means by this is that the company has given up its forays into the wine and sparkling wine business, partly because the "mentality" there is different. Instead, Underberg is now concentrating on high-proof brands such as Pitú, Asbach Uralt and Grasovka. As far as company management is concerned, Christiane Underberg is concerned with "grandchild capability", i.e. a strategy that goes far beyond the quarter. "We always have to be pioneers - I can't change anything backwards," says the 84-year-old.Social responsibility is important to Underberg, both towards its employees and with regard to society. "We are a value-oriented company," she says. "CSR was not a big surprise for us." Underberg talks about the work-life balance in her company, combinations of espresso and schnapps and why she is annoyed by her iPad. Christiane Underberg is a German entrepreneur and from 1982 was for many years managing director of Semper idem Underberg GmbH, the main company of the spirits manufacturer Underberg in Rheinberg, which she runs together with her husband Emil and daughter Hubertine in the fourth and fifth generation respectively.
