EPISODE DESCRIPTION
Jochen Schweizer popularized bungee jumping in Germany and invented the adventure voucher business. As an extreme sportsman, he plunged down torrents in a kayak and worked as a stuntman. He turned his hobby into a business model: In 1989, he opened the first bungee facility in Germany, quickly followed by others and the cranes were soon spread all over the country, later he sold adventure vouchers on the Internet, be it for balloon flights, diving courses or sled dog rides.
Today, the entrepreneur is 66 years old and talks a lot about meditation and his "third phase of life". "We have to be prepared to take risks and risk failure," says Schweizer in the podcast. "If we fail, it's all about how we deal with it." He himself has also made "dramatically wrong" decisions in his life.
Jochen Schweizer sold the majority of the company, which still bears his name, to ProSiebenSat.1 Media a few years ago. He himself still owns ten percent of the company. He is now concentrating on the Jochen Schweizer Arena, an adventure world in Taufkirchen near Munich with a wind tunnel and a wave for indoor surfing. "At the end of the day, it's not talent that sets you apart. It's your willingness to work hard," says Schweizer. In the podcast, he talks about his record-breaking bungee jump, about how he applies insights from bungee jumping to his life as an entrepreneur, about imprinting and genetics, the advantages of his childhood in the 1950s as a latchkey child of a single mother and a fatal accident that changed his life – in the podcast "Alles Neu...? Aus dem Maschinenraum" with Tobias Rappers, Managing Director of Maschinenraum, and Capital editor Katja Michel.
