EPISODE DESCRIPTION
Almost a hundred years ago, farmer Eduard Bauck decided to stop using artificial fertilizers. This made him one of the pioneers of biodynamic agriculture, which is based on the teachings of anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner. Bauck Mühle began marketing agricultural products in the 1960s. Today, it works according to the organic rules of the Demeter farming association, employs 240 people and most recently turned over around 70 million euros a year. Since last summer, Friedemann Wecker has been managing the business at Bauck, currently still together with Jan-Peter Bauck from the founding family. "The core idea was always to keep as much added value as possible in agriculture. It still guides us today. It's a completely different model than when I look at a scaling model and think about where the big markets are," he says. "We always ask ourselves the question: is there a willingness to pay for our products?"
Friedemann Wecker talks about his start in a third-generation family business, the handover process and the transformation from niche to mass market, as well as the consequences of the coronavirus crisis for Demeter producers - in the podcast "Alles Neu...? Aus dem Maschinenraum" with Tobias Rappers, Managing Director of Maschinenraum, and Capital editor Katja Michel.
Friedemann Wecker
Friedemann Wecker studied organic agricultural science and business and process management. He joined Bauck in 2021 and has been a member of the management board and head of operations since 2023. Friedemann Wecker previously worked at Demeter for 13 years and is still a member of the Supervisory Board there today.
