Episode description
Few brands have achieved what Edding has: becoming synonymous with an entire product category. Two school friends from Hamburg started importing waterproof felt-tip pens from Japan in 1960, and today Edding sells products in more than 100 countries around the world. The family-owned company is based in Ahrensburg near Hamburg and produces in Bautzen in Saxony, employs around 700 people and last year achieved a turnover of almost 160 million euros.
Founder's son Per Ledermann has been in charge since 2005. In the podcast “Alles Neu…? Aus dem Maschinenraum”, he talks about his succession in the family business and the difficult last few years. “We have really felt the pain of the transformation,” says the CEO. Edding had been operating in a very stable environment for a long time. “For many years, we always added a few percent to our turnover,” says Per Ledermann. “But our markets are changing radically at the moment. We are still heavily reliant on the office.” Edding therefore recently tried to break completely new ground, for example with nail polish and its own tattoo studio. Ledermann also admits what went wrong and what mistakes he made. He also explains how he wants to turn Edding into a pioneer of regenerative business - in the podcast “Alles Neu...? Aus dem Maschinenraum” with Tobias Rappers, Managing Director of Maschinenraum, and Capital editor Katja Michel.
