Episode description
Matthias and Tristan Horx explore a broad field: the future. In the New Year's episode of the podcast “Alles Neu...? Aus dem Maschinenraum”, father and son talk about the ‘omnicrisis’, futurology in times of chaos - and formulate a plea to look to the future with confidence despite all the gloomy news about wars and the crisis of liberal democracies. “Every trend has a counter-trend,” says Matthias Horx. “The right-wingers who are now trying to flee back to the 1950s will still be looking around.” You can't simply turn society backwards. This also applies, for example, to climate-friendly technologies such as electromobility. Horx expects “anti-ecological moaning” over the next five years. But in the end, new technologies will also prevail for price reasons.
The futurologist also talks about how his work has changed in recent years. “The future used to be a concept of longing,” he says. “Today, we live in a culture of fear. And when people drift into fear, society destroys itself from within.” Both father and son agree that exaggerated pessimism is misplaced. “The bigger the crisis, the greater the potential for cooperation between us. That's the human advantage. We are good because we cooperate. Especially in crises, we manage that,” says Tristan Horx - in the podcast ”Alles Neu...? Aus dem Maschinenraum” with Tobias Rappers, Managing Director of Maschinenraum, and Capital editor Katja Michel.
