Podcast „Alles neu...? Aus dem Maschinenraum“
Episode #53 | Elena von Metzler from Bankhaus Metzler: What Private Banking Is Really About
)
Episode description
Bankhaus Metzler is the oldest private bank in Germany that has remained continuously family-owned. Its roots go back to Benjamin Metzler, who began in 1674 in Frankfurt am Main with a cloth trading business that later became a bank. Today, the bank employs around 800 people, and Elena von Metzler, a representative of the 12th generation, is a partner and member of the supervisory board.
In the podcast “Alles neu...? Aus dem Maschinenraum,” she talks about her personal path into the family business. “At first, I thought the banking sector wasn’t for me,” says von Metzler, who initially worked for Nestlé for several years before joining her family’s bank. “I thought it was all about numbers and analyzing things all the time. But actually, it’s very much about human relationships.”
Elena von Metzler also discusses how the over-350-year-old bank reaches its clients in the digital age – and builds trust at the same time. “The generation that is now in charge naturally wants to see their portfolio on their phone. On the other hand, they still very much seek personal conversations.” That’s why Metzler invites entrepreneurs to networking events – such salons have long been a tradition at Metzler. “These take place in our family home – fully in line with tradition,” von Metzler shares. She also explains what the term “metzlern” means – and what Otto von Bismarck has to do with it, in the podcast “Alles neu...? Aus dem Maschinenraum” with Tobias Rappers, managing director of Maschinenraum, and Capital editor Katja Michel.
