EPISODE NOTES
Strictly speaking, WEPA, the Sauerland-based manufacturer of sanitary paper, has no problem. 25 per cent market share in Germany and a product that is always needed. During the pandemic lockdowns, the absorbent papers were a big seller. Nevertheless, Andreas Krengel, board member of the family-owned company, is thinking about change. “There is a stable demand, but it is also not increasing as much,“ says Krengel in the podcast “Alles Neu...? Aus dem Maschinenraum“. It is also important to Krengel to offer customers more environmentally friendly products. That is also why WEPA is working with a start-up that sells toilet paper "without plastic, without chemicals and without bullshit". A sanitary paper for the Thunberg generation, so to speak. “We have set ourselves the goal of being the most sustainable and agile company in our industry by 2023,“ says Krengel, even if that means first developing a demand ourselves: “Our ambition is to create a new market for ourselves.“ Krengel explains why he is looking for new distribution channels, why he doesn't think much of air dryers and how it is that his family publishes its own newspaper - in the podcast with Tobias Rappers, Managing Director of Maschinenraum and Capital editor Nils Kreimeier.
